Alan McGee MA, BA, Dip SW, Dip HE, Dip Counselling, has worked in the drug and alcohol field for over twenty years and has been involved, both as a practitioner and as a manager, in the development and promotion of HIV prevention and harm reduction initiatives within the health and social care sector.

In the mid 1980s, Alan worked with the team that pioneered one of the first needle and syringe programmes in England and helped to develop harm reduction initiatives across Merseyside. Alan has held a number of posts within health and social care drug and alcohol services including harm reduction practitioner, drug and alcohol care co-ordinator, GP shared care worker, specialist drug treatment team manager and deputy director for Merseycare drugs and HIV prevention services.

Between 2003 and 2009, Alan was trainer and project consultant with HIT. In 2008, Alan and colleagues from Liverpool John Moores University facilitated and piloted a harm reduction training group at the International Harm Reduction Conference in Barcelona. The success of this pilot group led, in 2010, to the launch of the First International Training Academy, and Alan as an academy tutor, at The International Harm Reduction Conference in Liverpool.
